Dj Thump got up close and personal with Teena Marie before she passed away
It was exactly 2 months before the legendary Teena Marie passed away that I got the chance to interview her. Not really an interview it was more of a conversation. we talked about her music, her life and relationship with late legendary great Rick James and her passion for cooking soul food. what was supposed to be a 5 or 10 minute interview turned into a 45 min conversation. We laughed when she told me how people reacted the first time they saw her and found out she was NOT BLACK!!! Motown even opted not to send out press photos so as not to prejudice fans and radio stations with the fact that she was white. We also talked about her connections with Saturday Night Live. She was the godmother to former cast member Maya Rudolph who is the daughter of the late legendary singer Minnie Ripperton and music producer Richard Rudolph who produced her second album “lady T”
Of all the celebrities I had the pleasure of interviewing, Teena Marie was the most memorable. so down to earth and genuine. I remember the last thing you told me that day…”May you never grow old and may you never die”
Thank you Lady T for all of the great memories and great music. You are so missed, but your music shall continue to live on.
R.I.P. To the late great Teena Marie
