After a very eventful offseason, the Las Vegas Aces opened training camp a couple of weeks ago with renewed expectations under new head coach Becky Hammon, who replaces Bill Laimbeer. Hammon is a former WNBA star, playing 16 years in the league.

The Aces made the playoffs last season but were ousted in the semifinals by Phoenix.

As training camp opened the Aces looked slightly different without the presence of center Liz Cambage, who was a free agent and signed with Los Angeles. All Star forward A’ja Wilson returns to the team however along with three other starters from last season. Coach Hammon says the Aces will play a different style of basketball this season with less low post play and more three point shooting with a faster pace.

The Aces’ new style was on display last night as they played their only exhibition game, losing 89-86 to the Lynx in Minnesota. Las Vegas shot 23 three pointers in the game and got to the free throw line 33 times. Kelsey Plum led the Aces with 16 points.

Las Vegas opens regular season play this Friday at Phoenix at 7pm. Phoenix All Star center Brittney Griner won’t play as she is still being detained in Russia on drug smuggling charges. The Aces will play their first home game on Sunday, May 8 vs. Seattle at 7pm at Michelob Ultra Arena at Mandalay Bay.
