That Las Vegas South Valley Hole In The Ground Keeps Getting Bigger
There’s a hole in the ground near this Las Vegas site, and it just keeps getting bigger.
Having recently relocated to the South Valley, I was unfamiliar with that gigantic hole in the earth between Durango Drive and Peace Way. I drive by that huge fenced-off eyesore every day, and I wonder what those big semi-trucks are doing coming and going.
I assumed this was the future site for another casino or high-rise apartment complex but no. After a little digging of my own, I learned that this is simply a rock quarry straight out of bedrock from the world of The Flintstones minus the dinosaurs.
According to a report last year from the Las Vegas Advisor, they are excavating gravel for building projects. When you have work done on your driveway or create a walkway path, the gravel used came from a quarry just like this.
The site is owned and operated by Wells Cargo, a family business that began back in 1935. These holes or ‘”pits” as they’re referred to have been around for quite a long time. I had just have never seen one up close. And as you can see by all the fencing and “No Trespassing” signs, this is as close as I’ll ever get.
You can see just how massive the hole really is from the Google Earth view here.
