Lupus Awareness: DJ Thump Talks To Colors Of Lupus Nevada CEO
May is Lupus Awareness month, however there are some that fight lupus all year. Lupus is a autoimmune disease, which means the body attacks its own cells and organs, including the kidneys, blood, heart, lungs, skin, joints and brain.
I have to admit, I heard of Lupus… but I was unaware of this disease. I sat with Mrs. Autumn Austin, from Las Vegas, Nevada and was enlightened to say the least. Lupus is incurable and no two people have all of the same symptoms. According to webmd.com “African American women in particular seem to have a higher risk of getting lupus. As many as 1 in 250 will develop the disease.”
Autumn was very transparent in our conversation, as she expressed how her life is on a daily with Lupus and how it can also ‘test your mental stability.’ Having a great support team is key when fighting this disease. And Autumn spoke on her amazing team. A blended family of 7 children, 4 grand kids and a strong and supportive husband, Mr. “Seven” Austin.
The 8 Annual Walking The World Purple Lupus Walk at the William U. Pearson Center, 1625 West Carey, Las Vegas, NV 89106. Saturday May 20th from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. As this year they will honor our very own Sandee Bonita who recently lost her life to lupus.
Each year the walk gets bigger, meaning there are more people learning why Purple is the color for the month of May. Purple is a combination of red and blue. The color red represents passion and motivation and the color blue represents a sense of calmness. It is the perfect blend of colors that represent the characteristics needed to fight lupus.
The sad misconception of this disease is that lupus only affects women. The truth is, lupus can develop in anyone male or female. Check out this exclusive interview with Autumn Austin on The “Thump In The Morning Show.”
