Family Game Night Playing By The Wrong Rules
Family game night can be fun yet frustrating, especially when “everyone” does not play by the same rules. There are three different rules to most family games.
The original game rules are printed, and by the way… they’re included with the game. The house rules are the rules of whoever’s house you are playing at. And then, of course, rules that are made up as you go.
No matter the generation, age group, or where you are from, somehow, some games have all three of those above mentioned.
Family Game Night Can Get Real Serious With Spades
There have been times I have witnessed families almost come to blows behind a spades game. Pagat.com clearly explains the official rules. So if you don’t know how to play spades, please do not volunteer to be someone’s partner that is a “professional.” This is one of those games that can seen very aggressive, but trust me they are actually having fun.
Uno Is A Family Game Night Favorite
Another popular, yet slightly less aggressive game is Uno. This is truly a family game night favorite. Draw four, reverse, skip, and of course yell Uno when you only have one card remaining. The confusion comes when the rules are not established before the game starts.
My little cousin Destiny says if you play a draw two and the next player has a draw two as well, they can match yours and make you draw four. huh?… That’s what I said. So I looked it up and according to unorules.com “When a person places this card, the next player will have to pick up two cards and forfeit his/her turn.” Sorry if I sound a little petty, but “You are wrong Destiny!” ok, I’m good now.
Uno Is a very fun family game that’s often played by families from all over the world. And in most cases the rules vary depending on where you are.
Monopoly Has It’s Disagreements As Well
I think Monopoly is one of the most famous and popular board games. I often chose the shoe as my game piece because I like to walk all over my opponents. but this game has its differences as well.
I was taught all of the community chest money goes under free parking, and whoever lands on that space gets the money. Well according to monopoly.fandom.com “When a player lands here nothing happens and they move off the space on their next turn.” Boring!

So my advice is to agree on said rules or read the instructions before playing, you might have been playing these games and others wrong the entire time.
