Breakdancing Is Now An Event In The 2024 Olympics
Breakdancing is a part of hip-hop history. And let us not get it twisted, hip-hop is not just a genre, it’s a culture. A culture that many didn’t think would last. Breakdancing, pop-locking, graffiti, Djing, and rap, all define what hip-hop means. According to the LA Times, “Breaking was created in the Bronx by Black and Puerto Rican youth during the 1980s and has since expanded worldwide.”
Breakdancing Started It All
Before the emcees grabbed the mic and started rapping, the DJ would set the tone for the dancers. Britannica says ” Break dancing originated in New York City during the late 1960s and early ’70s, incorporating moves from a variety of sources, including martial arts and gymnastics. So contrary to popular belief, rap came after breaking. The legendary DJKool Herc gave birth to Hip-hop over 50 years ago. As he would DJ for his local neighborhood in the Bronx NY, he noticed the people’s vibe would change as he would play the breakbeats. The “break” is where the vocals and all instruments other than drums would fade out.
Breakdancing Elevated And Became Global
First was the DJ, then came the dancers, then the rappers. Where most people thought hip-hop would only be a phase and would fade away quickly, it did just the opposite. It spread like a pandemic. Not only did it become popular in the United States, it went global! According to historyofthehiphop.wordpress.com, breakdancing spread worldwide, due to popularity in the media, especially in regions such as South Korea, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Russia, and Japan. In fact, it has grown so much that it has become a competitive event in the world Olympics.
How To Score Olymic Breakdancing
In the Olympics, 16 men and 16 women will compete in several rounds including quarterfinals, semifinals, and medal battles. Just like on the streets, each dance battle features a best-of-three, one-on-one contest lasting approximately one minute. When one dancer finishes their round, their opponent instantly begins their dance routine. Each battle shouldn’t last longer than 60 seconds, however, there are no penalties for performing too long.

Unlike in figure skating or gymnastics, competitors are unaware of the music ahead of time. The element of surprise carries a lot of weight in the judging. I am excited to see the level of competition in the breakdancers in Paris this year. I hope Team USA can bring home the first gold medal in this new category. However, we can’t sleep on these other countries. According to cnnsports.com “South Korea has long been among the world’s best. Kim Heon-woo, also known as B-boy Wing, leads Team Korea’s breaking team in Hangzhou. Let’s go Team USA! Bring home the gold.
