Las Vegas Judge Jumper Gets Massive Sentence
In the sky, it’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s… the Las Vegas judge jumper getting an absolutely gargantuan sentence for his attack on a judge earlier this year.
Deobra Redden was in court on Tuesday for sentencing, facing the music for his stunt which made worldwide headlines. While the attack was heinous, they threw the book at him using what he said afterwards. That resulted in a massive sentence of 26-65 years in prison.
Redden was much better behaved this go-around. The Las Vegas judge jumper is no stranger to the courtroom, having faced several charges before. His lawyer argued that Redden is a schizophrenic and was not being provided his medication while in custody. That did little to sway the court.
What The Las Vegas Judge Jumper Did
The story of the Las Vegas judge jumper went around the world and back. Redden was in the midst of being sentenced in an attempted battery case. But before Judge Mary Kay Holthus could render her sentence, he went ballistic and leaped over the judge’s bench (in a feat that would be incredibly impressive outside of this arena) and attacked Holthus and others who tried to stop him, causing multiple injuries.
After the attack, he admitted to officers that he was trying to kill her. But in court today, both he and his lawyer tried to explain that he wasn’t “an evil guy” and he wasn’t actually trying to kill her, once again pointing to the lack of proper medication while in custody. But it made no difference come sentencing.
The Las Vegas judge jumper was immortalized in pop culture in the weeks following the attack, with Saturday Night Live parodying Redden and UFC President Dana White meeting up with Judge Mary Kay Holthus at Red Rock for a photo soon after.
