Aces Hire Becky Hammon As New Head Coach
The Las Vegas Aces have hired former WNBA star Becky Hammon to take over as head coach. Hammon signed a five year deal and will be the highest paid coach in the WNBA.
Former Aces head coach Bill Laimbeer will remain with the team and will oversee roster construction. In a statement, Laimbeer said “This is the best possible scenario for the Las Vegas Aces. It takes a tremendous amount of energy to be a head coach. In Becky, the team now has somebody who can serve in that role for the long term, which is great for both the players and the franchise.”
Aces President Nikki Fargas added “We are forever thankful for the dedication and commitment Bill Laimbeer has made to the Aces organization and to the WNBA. He has been completely encouraging and supportive of this transition, and is as excited as the rest of us are to see what the future holds for this team and this city.”
Hammon played 16 seasons in the WNBA, first with the New York Liberty and then with the San Antonio Silver Stars, who moved to Las Vegas and became what are now the Aces. Hammon has been serving as an assistant coach with the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs and coached their Summer League to the championship in 2015.
