A Book Kiosk Machine Hits The West Side Of The Valley
Book kiosk machines that have been installed in schools across the nation and the high price associated with them. With a cost of over $6,000 for the machine and thousands more for the books each year, it’s no surprise that schools are having difficulty finding the necessary funds.
according to Ward 5 City Councilman Cedric Crear International Company Jet Blue picked only 13 cities throughout the country to provide the ‘Soar With Reading program’ and Las Vegas was picked amongst the thirteen cities. They installed this cool looking kiosk filled with brand new books at the Doolittle Community Center in the historic West Side Las Vegas. Jet Blue will maintain the kiosk and keep it stocked with books for the kids in the community.
The good thing about this kiosk is, Unlike the mobile book store at the Blvd Mall, kids can check out books and don’t have to worry about returning them, They can actually keep the books and build there own library.
Jet Blue chose Doolittle Community Center to add to some of the other great programs already in place such as the tour at Zion national park with the rangers. Cedric Crear is a huge believer of vision. He says “We have to instill vision in our youth, because if they can’t see themselves doing different things, it’s gong to be hard for them to do different things.”
Book Kiosk machines provide another avenue to get books in the hands of student to create excitement about reading books and not to rely on cell phones and social media.
According to wordsrated.com “reading books can develop stronger reading habits and improve literacy skills more efficiently than through formal education.”
Sadly, Las Vegas public schools, including the Clark County School District and charter schools are 49th out of 50, ahead only of Honolulu, Hawaii. The Soar with reading program is a great start for changing those numbers for the better.
Great job Jet Blue and Ward 5 City Councilman Cedric Crear. One Child and One mission at a time.
