North Las Vegas Police Department Community Engagement Division is making positive efforts to bridge the gap between the community and officers. The 2nd annual Badges and Bros. event was held at The North Las Vegas Silver Mesa Recreation Center, and it was a success.

Police officers laced their basketball shoes and challenged local kids in the community to a full court basketball game. There also was a three point contest, around the world, and  an exciting game of HORSE.

Lunch was provided by Raising Canes and Jason’s Deli. I had the chance speak with officer Chris Campbell and he makes it clear that the purpose of the event is to give the community the chance to engage with NLVPD on a positive note. Officer Campbell says, “Officers getting to know their community on a personal level increases awareness and community protection.” Too many “misunderstandings” take place due to the lack of education and connection individuals have with their local police force.

The event was very educational but also full of surprises. Former NFL wide receiver Brandon Marshall played 13 seasons in the National Football League, showed up to the event. Not only did he make an appearance, but he actually interacted and mentored the boys.

The Chief of NLVPD, Jaqueline Gravatt, was also in attendance and encouraged the young men to soar beyond their wildest dreams. Badges and Bros. is an event that’s free to the public and is designed for young men ages five to seventeen.

Badges and Bows is for young ladies. Their next event is July 26, 2023. The North Las Vegas Police Department Community Engagement Division will also host a Juneteenth Festival on June 16 at the William U. Pearson Center, located at 1625 West Carey, Las Vegas, NV 89106.

It is very important for a community to get to know each other as neighbors and interact on a positive note.

I salute the men and women of our local police dept. for their unselfish sacrifice and their desire to bring the community together.
