Game Of Thrones: Three Great Quotes From Episode Three
“Not today.”
Last week’s episode of Game of Thrones was almost all dialogue (other than Arya’s decision to have her way with Gendry), and episode three was almost the polar opposite (pun intended). There have been some wild battles in GOT over the years, but “The Battle Of Winterfell” may have been the bloodiest, wildest and most chaotic.
Still, there were some great lines, and two of them were “recycled” from the show’s history.
Melisandre (“The Red Woman”) made her return and, for once, her sorcery came in handy, as she cast a spell igniting thousands of swords. That trick only helped out momentarily, and it wasn’t her biggest contribution to the battle. When she came face to face with Arya (who, under other conditions, might have killed her, especially after learning what she did to Gendry), she gave the young warrior a pep talk: “What do we say to the God of Death?”
Arya’s answer: “Not today.” That’s a line she learned from her sword instructor Syrio Forel, way back in season one: as he told her, “There is only one god, and His name is Death. And there is only one thing we say to Death: ‘Not today.'”
Also back in season one, Jon Snow gave Arya her beloved blade Needle. He told her to remember to “stick them with the pointy end.” She gave that same advice to her older sister Sansa when she gave her a blade to defend herself with, after Sansa confessed that she didn’t know how to use it.
Finally, an unexpected line came from Bran, being cryptic as usual. “Theon, you’re a good man. Thank you.” It was a nice bit of redemption for a character who has spent the series operating in very grey areas (pun intended). Soon after Bran’s comment, Theon met his end at the Night King’s blade.
A very honorable mention goes to Ser Jorah Mormont, who died defending Daenerys Targaryen. What did he say to her with his last breath? We’re guessing, “I love you.”
With Winterfell in ruins, but the White Walkers are no more, our heroes still have to worry about winter — with a lowercase “w.” It looks pretty damn cold out there, and now there’s considerably less shelter from the storm, as it were. If they survive the cold, more trouble awaits. Cersei Lannister still has a fairly large army, one which hasn’t been decimated by the White Walkers.
