Black History Moment: Remembering Robert Abbott
Jammin’ 105.7 and DJ Thump take today to honor the life and legacy of Robert Abbott!
Abbott founded the Chicago Defender weekly newspaper in 1905. His vision paved the way for future Black publications to exist. Outlets like Ebony, Essence, Black Enterprise and Upscale all used Abbot’s vision to succeed.
Through Abbott’s newspaper, he encouraged African-Americans to move away from the south to metropolitan cities. Thus, empowering others through his messaging.
He passed away on February 29, 1940, at the age of 69.
