DJing at the Neverland Ranch and receiving a kiss from Janet Jackson is beyond being on my wish list of things to accomplish. On July, 27, 2001, I, DJ Thump, had the honor of DJing, Joe Jackson Day at the Neverland Ranch in Santa Barbara, California.
Actually being on the property of such a legendary estate was an incredible experience. So many celebrities were in attendance like, Tisha Campbell, George Michael, Aretha Franklin, Sting and 2Pac just to name a few. Michael Jackson was in Australia but sent a video welcome. A train which trolls the compound was used to pick up guests and bring them into the celebration.
Now you have to understand how much I love Janet Jackson. She stole my heart at a young age when she played “Penny” on the tv show “Good Times” with Ja’Net DuBois as Penny‘s adapted mother. Watching her grow up as “Charlene” on the tv show “Different Strokes” with actors Todd Bridges and Gary Coleman was a joy.
There’s no need to argue that Janet Jackson is truly an icon. Fandom.com says, “Janet Jackson has received eleven American Music Awards, five Grammy Awards, nine MTV Video Music Awards, and 11 Billboard Music Awards.”
Janet is beautiful, smart and so well accomplished. I could feel my heart drop when she arrived. She exited the train and walked my way. As our eyes connected, I knew I had to say something and the only thing came out was… “Janet I have every song you have ever done.” She smiled and said “Thank you that’s so sweet.”
I told her the song, “Say You Do” was my favorite on her first self-entitled album ‘Janet Jackson.’ Janet walked over and gave me a very innocent but sincere hug and gently kissed me on my cheek. I tried to turn my face and sneak one on the lips but my timing was completely off.
Happy Birthday Janet! I will always cherish that moment.
