We know country and hip-hop are their own genres, but sometimes the crossover makes for great results. Both genres are deeply rooted in history and storytelling in their own way. But, what happens when an artist from each genre decides to cross over and make a hip-hop, country twang that everyone loves?

Over the years, we have seen some of the biggest country and hip-hop stars link up to produce a fusion hit between both genres. From Nelly collaborating with everyone to Beyonce and Snoop Dogg joining Willie Nelson and The Chicks.

Although there used to be a bold line to separate artists from other genres, we have seen what can happen when the lines get blurred and a crossover blows up into a hit. So, don’t be afraid to listen to other genres because sometimes the crossovers will introduce an artist to an entirely new audience.

This year, Morgan Wallen joined rapper Moneybagg Yo for his song, Whiskey Whiskey. This allowed country artists to learn about a rapper they may have never heard of and rap fans to learn about a country artist they may not have known about. The collaborations are good when they’re done right. Check out 5 of the best country and hip-hop collaborations we’ve seen in the last few years and tell us what you think!

5 Country Artists and Hip-Hop Artists Crossovers

  • Florida Georgia Line featuring Nelly “Cruise” (2012)

We’re starting with one of my favorite country/hip-hop collabs ever. When Florida Georgia Line and Nelly teamed up for “Cruise” in 2012, it was like everything stopped and everyone just wanted to have a good time. The original version of “Cruise” was already taking off and blowing Florida Georgia Line up, but the remix with Nelly took everything to an entirely new level. The song was a hit anywhere you went whether it was a country bar or hip-hop lounge, everyone knew the words (and probably still does).

  • Lil Nas X featuring Billy Ray Cyrus "Old Town Road" (2018)

This was certainly one of the biggest songs of the year when this was released. After Lil Nas X released “Old Town Road” and spectators began to give their judgement on whether it was considered country to not, Billy Ray Cyrus took matters into his own hands when he joined him for the remix to make the song an even bigger hit. Both in country, pop, and hip-hop… the song was everywhere! The song dominated the Billboard Hot 100, Hip-Hop/R&B, and Country charts simultaneously. Less than a year after its release, “Old Town Road” reached Diamond status in record time. https://youtu.be/r7qovpFAGrQ?si=ZfZJNiuQe_2nTjHj

  • Beyoncé featuring The Chicks “Daddy Lessons” (2016)

Up next, is one of everyone’s favorite who loves some female powerhouses on the mic. It’s the moment Beyonce joined the legendary group The Chicks, to create one of our favorite mashups ever. “Daddy Lessons” was Beyonce’s first country song on her album, Lemonade. She got The Chicks to join her on the remix for the song and it landed on the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop charts. Although a success, many of the country music fans did not embrace the song or collaboration. Even with the backlash, the two came together and performed at the 50th Annual Country Music Association Awards.  https://youtu.be/85Ksi-uzuIg

  • Nelly featuring Tim McGraw "Over and Over" 2004

Told you Nelly did a song with everyone! He even got a hit with one of the greatest in country music, Tim McGraw. The two joined forces to release the single from Nelly’s fourth album. It charted the Billboard Hot 100 charts for weeks and gained much traction.

  • Lil Durk - Broadway Girls feat. Morgan Wallen

Lastly, we’ll give something a bit more current. Morgan Wallen has been teaming up with hip-hop artists a lot these last few years so here is one of his hits with rapper, Lil Durk. The two joined together in 2021 to release the song, Broadway Girls. The song stamped the first time that Wallen had sung over a trap type beat. Although more hip-hop focused than country, the song did launch Wallen into a different audience.
