Some local apartment residents, especially at weekly rental properties, have been complaining that landlords were putting eviction notices on their apartments and threatening to deactivate their key cards for non-payment of rent despite directives not to. Governor Steve Sisolak has responded by ordering a stop to all residential and commercial eviction proceedings while the state of emergency related to the coronavirus pandemic is in effect. The order also applies to any eviction proceedings that were filed before the declaration. Landlords are prohibited from placing notices on tenants’ doors or mailboxes. The governor stressed that the order doesn’t mean that residents get free rent but should inform their landlords of their situation and will have to make up any missed rent payments. Landlords are required to continue to maintain their properties. For homeowners, Nevada State Treasurer Zach Conine announced that some mortgage lenders will be enacting a 90 day grace period on mortgage payments. Homeowners should check with their lender to see if the grace period is being offered.
