NEW YORK, NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 13: Lil Nas X attends The 2021 Met Gala Celebrating In America: A Lexicon Of Fashion at Metropolitan Museum of Art on September 13, 2021 in New York City.

In a recent interview with XXL, Lil Nas X opens up about his experience of being an openly gay male rapper in hip-hop.

“Honestly, I don’t feel as respected in hip-hop or many music places in general,” Lil Nas X says in an interview with the outlet this past week. “But these are communities that I am a part of, whether people would like it or not. This is something that I wanted to do because, not that my entire album is rap, but there are rap tracks on my album. I am a rapper. I am a pop star. I am a gay artist. But it’s like, I belong in these places, you know?”

When asked why he made the decision to come out publicly he responded: “I honestly felt like it was kind of my duty,” adding, “Especially if I wanted to move forward. And what I was doing, because authenticity is very real, and I feel like people can see right through that. And that’s a part of me.”

The 22-year-old just released his first studio album titled Montero and fans have been thanking him for his vulnerability in the album.

One fan wrote, “Can I just say that if a major recording artist had released this song when I was a kid, it would have saved me so much self-hatred and sadness. I f—— love Lil Nas X and how unapologetically he is who he is. That’s What I Want is a BOP let’s stream the f—out of it.”

After the release of the album he thanked his fans for the support he received, “just wanna say thank u again to every single person who gave my album a listen. so many people said i wouldn’t have a career after 2019 and now i have one of the biggest albums of the year. i love u guys and i do not take u for granted.”
