TIME 100 Next: Ice Spice, Tems, & Metro Boomin Make The List
Ice Spice, Tems, and Metro Boomin are trailblazers in hip-hop and R&B, and TIME’s 100 Next is recognizing their efforts. Ice Spice and Tems are in the “Phenoms” category on the publication’s annual list. Metro Boomin was placed in the “Innovators” section. Take a look below to see which celebrity wrote about each artist and what they had to say:
Ice Spice
Writer and comedian Ziwe penned the Bronx rapper’s write-up for TIME. She spoke about how when she first met her, it was at a photo shoot. “In a room full of stars, she was the baddie I wanted to sit with the most,” Ziwe wrote. The Bronx rapper has had such a successful year. She collaborated with Nicki Minaj (twice), and Taylor Swift on the “Karma” remix. Last night, she snagged Best New Artist at the VMAs last night so TIME including her seems especially timely.
Tems
Those who are unfamiliar with Tems’ work might recognize her sample in the song “Wait For U” with Future and Drake that was released last year. The Nigerian beauty’s TIME write-up was penned by Mary J. Blige. “That voice is so unique and original, so much so that it reminds me of the first time I heard Nina Simone. They both sing with emotion and conviction, making you feel every word they sing,” Mary said of Tems’ talent. The “Family Affair” singer also wrote about how beautiful a person Tems is inside and out. She felt this way after their initial meeting at the Grammys last year. Tems is definitely a force to be reckoned with.
Metro Boomin
You can’t mention modern hip-hop and not speak about the pure talent of Metro Boomin. Metro has worked with several artists including Future, Drake, Migos, 21 Savage, Post Malone, and more. John Legend wrote about him for TIME, a man of many talents as well. “I was struck by his sense of openness, humility, and creativity. As a collaborator, Metro always has great creative ideas, but what really sets him apart is his great energy,” Legend wrote about the Missouri rapper. Metro’s last project Heroes & Villains debuted at No. 1 and he is rumored to have a collab album with Future in the works.
