Music Is A Healing Aid For Mental Health
Music is a healing aid for most mental health issues. A soothing song can calm some anxieties. Although I don’t claim to be a licensed therapist I just know what works for me. However, there’s some research to back my theory.
Music’s effect on mental health
According to psychiatry.org, music can regulate our mood and lower our stress. Think about going to your favorite spa. You can always count on two things to help with mental health: aromatherapy, and soothing music. This isn’t a coincidence. Both tools have been proven to help people relax.
Musictherapy.org reports that music therapy has been used to “improve depressive symptoms, decrease anxiety, and improve functioning for people with a variety of mental health conditions”. I have had a recent personal experience where I felt a lot of anxiety. And it was through listening to music that I could do something I never would have done without it.
Music Can Calm A Mental Storm
I have a severe case of claustrophobia (self-diagnosed), and I was scheduled for an MRI. I immediately started to sweat when I saw the machine. The tech noticed my discomfort and asked me what type of music I liked. I didn’t think about the reason he was inquiring, I was more focused on my fear of tight spaces. According to medicalnewstoday.com “Claustrophobia is a form of anxiety disorder, in which an irrational fear of having no escape or being closed-in can lead to a panic attack”.
Without realizing it, I answered, “Smooth jazz is one of my favorite genres of music”. He handed me a pair of headphones and before I knew it the music calmed me down and I was able to face my fears with a sense of comfort.
Healthline.com reports that when someone feels anxious, the body releases cortisol, which puts it into “fight or flight” mode. Symptoms of this include a racing heart, tense muscles, stomach pain, and shallow breathing. So if you are feeling the effects of mental health, I will always recommend a professional therapist first, but in the meantime, try to relax and let some soothing music comfort your soul and your mental stability.
