‘The Power Of The Dog’ Among Big Winners At Golden Globes
Last night, the 2022 Golden Globes took place, but the usually splashy ceremony was incredibly low key. Few celebrities showed up for the event, which wasn’t televised… robbing fans of seeing their favorite celebrities drunk (which is generally the main appeal of the show). Over the years the Golden Globes have seemed to, in some cases, influence the more prestigious Academy Awards. But let’s be real – the Golden Globes without drunk celebs is like going to the movies to buy food and then go home. That might work for some people, but not too many.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, who puts on the Golden Globes, has been dealing with scandals since the 2021 show, when it was revealed that they had no Black members and participated in questionable business practices. NBC then decided not to air the ceremony this year.
The Golden Globes have never been the most credible award show anyway: as of last year, there were only 87 voters, according the the L.A. Times. And, according to a 2019 report in EW, the HFPA “seemingly” favors “celebrity over the merits of individual films and performances. As the groupâs membership is so small, itâs easier for studios and publicists to screen their films for the HFPA as a whole. This likely makes the awards body more susceptible to groupthink and favoritism when it comes to voting on their year-end picks.” It also makes it easier for celebrities (and studios) to campaign to the relatively small voting body.
But anyway, if you’re interested:  here are the winners for this year’s Golden Globes. The Power Of The Dog was among the big winners, as was West Side Story and HBO’s Succession.
