The Las Vegas Lowrider Super Show took over the Las Vegas Convention Center on Saturday, Sept. 30.
Beautiful lowriders sparkled and shined in the convention center. Car clubs lined the corridors of the building with proud members displaying their hard work, dedication and prized possessions along the hall.
West Coast Classics!
Some of our hometown clubs and communities like Foolish In Vegas and more were in attendance. But, the West Coast was present at this year’s super show, and they represented! Clubs from Arizona, California and Colorado also showed out with immaculate vehicles that radiated with Chicano pride, creativity and lowrider unity.
Cruising Is Not A Crime
Many of these clubs have preserved the culture of lowriding, keeping alive a tradition that was banned for many years. In fact, a bill, AB 436, would essentially take away a ban on cruising in California, according to ABC 10 in San Diego. San Jose was the most -recent city to repeal its ban against cruising.
The pristine cars packed inside of the convention center mirrored an art gallery, but for the automotive lovers. Each car tells a story. From the intricate murals of Aztec warriors to even pictures of curvy women donning bikinis and tattoos being painted on cars, the attention to detail and artistry of each vehicle are unique.
No car was similar. Sparkly paintjobs and former jalopy cars transformed into cultural expressions united everyone in that room.
The culture of lowriding is a testament to the grit of the Latino community, who refused to let this art die out. According to the Smithsonian Museum, lowriding culture has roots in the 1940s. After World War II, Mexican Americans veterans were buying cars with the “service” money they received from the war.
“Mexican Americans were purposefully altering their cars—Chevys, which were in surplus at the time and designed with an X on the bottom that made them easy to modify were especially popular—so that, unlike the “hot and fast” hot rods, their cars would be ‘low and slow.'”
