In a world filled with superheroes and mermaids it’s refreshing when a good ol’ fashioned dog movie comes out. Most everyone has watched a canine classic with their parents or grandparents at some point like ‘Lassie Come Home‘ or Disney‘s 1957 western ‘Old Yeller‘.

My fondest memory of watching a dog movie is going to the theater with my mom to see the original ‘Benji‘ flick. The feel-good story about a stray golden mutt who helps track down a pair of kidnapped children and wins the hearts of the townspeople. The G-rated family film was a huge success and launched multiple sequels.

We have grown up watching dogs depicted as man’s best friend our entire childhoods like Mickey Mouse with Pluto, Charlie Brown with Snoopy, and Shaggy with his Great Dane Scooby-Do. Dogs have also been featured as the leading character in animations such as Huckleberry Hound, Droopy, Clifford, and a shoeshine boy’s crime-fighting alter-ego known as Underdog.

There have been so many different dog movies made over the years that it would be a bit unfair to attempt to rate decades-old classics against today’s releases so our “Top 10 Dog Movies” is confined to live-action movies from the 2000’s.

It will be interesting to see how audiences react to the upcoming dog movie ‘Strays‘ which is scheduled to hit theaters this August. The movie is an R-rated comedy starring Will Forte and features the voices of Will Ferrell, Jamie Foxx, and Isla Fisher.

Strays‘ follows an abandoned dog that teams up with other strays to get revenge on his former owner. You can view the ‘bleeped-out’ version of the trailer below:

Our “Top 10 Dog Movies Of The 2000’s” kicks off with a behind-the-scenes look into the highly competitive and cut-throat world of dog shows through the eyes of a group of ruthless dog owners. 2000’s ‘Best In Show‘ reunited stars Eugene Levy and Jennifer Coolidge who both appeared in 1999’s raunchy comedy ‘American Pie‘.
