Aaliyah’s Latest Posthumous Record ‘Poison’ Pairs Her With The Weeknd
Aaliyah’s latest posthumous record features R&B crooner The Weeknd.
In the past year, Aaliyah’s music being released had fans reliving her largest hits and watching her iconic music videos honoring the late R&B songbird.
Blackground Records, who currently owns Aaliyah’s discography, has been in legal battles with her estate for decades in trying to release her official music videos to YouTube and music to streaming services.
Back in August, Aaliyah’s estate, released a statement regarding their feelings about her music being released:
“Protecting Aaliyah’s legacy is, and will always be, our focus,” the heartfelt post began. “For 20 years we have battled behind the scenes, enduring shadowy tactics of deception with unauthorized projects targeted to tarnish.”
“Now, in this 20th year, this unscrupulous endeavor to release Aaliyah’s music without any transparency or full accounting to the estate compels our hearts to express a word – forgiveness,” the estate also said that they will continue to defend themselves “lawfully and justly.”
However, this did not stop Blackground Records from releasing her music and is now promising a new project to Aaliyah fans.
“Poison” is the first single from an upcoming Aaliyah collection called Unstoppable, and in a press release per Uproxx, Blackground’s founder and Aaliyah’s uncle Barry Hankerson spoke about the new song and the upcoming project.
“I’m so excited to share this new song by Aaliyah and the very talented The Weeknd,” he said about the new single. “I wanted her adoring fans to get a special gift before the holidays and felt it was the perfect time to release a never-before-heard offering.”
