Commemorating Juneteenth in Vegas
On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation during the American Civil War. It freed over three million slaves.
It took two and a half years for word to reach Texas, on June 19, 1865. People celebrated emancipation with prayers, they sang in spirit and wore clothes to represent their new found freedom.
June 19th is now officially a national holiday known as Juneteenth National Independence Day, marking the anniversary when African Americans discovered the Emancipation Proclamation two and a half years after it was signed.
