Originally released in December of 2009, “Avatar” was a groundbreaking visual phenomenon written, directed, and produced by James Cameron. The movie starred Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, and Sigourney Weaver.
Thirteen years after its initial release, “Avatar” is back in Las Vegas theaters for a limited time in anticipation of its sequel, “Avatar 2: The Way of Water,” scheduled for release on Dec. 16.
The film is set in the mid-22nd century where humans are colonizing a habitable moon called Pandora. The mining colony threatens the existence of a local humanoid species known as the Na’vi tribe. Sam Worthington portrays Jake Sully who remotely uses a genetically engineered Na’vi body to interact with the Pandora locals.
The movie went on to become the highest grossing film in movie history and launched “Pandora – The World of Avatar” at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park in Florida.
The movie-related adventures include “Avatar Flight of Passage” where you can fly on the back of a mountain banshee during an exhilarating 3D ride over the vast moon, “Na’vi River Journey” where you go deep into a bioluminescent rainforest in search of the Na’vi Shaman of Songs, and “Valley of Mo’ara” where you can hike amid floating mountains, glowing fauna & flora, and a native drum circle.
This movie was genre-bending and changed the way that movie makers incorporated computer-generate imagery within their films. The details of this movie are truly amazing when you realize that many of the scenes were done thanks to CGI. It was the perfect marriage of computer technology and cinematography, and one didn’t compromise the other. This movie was new, exciting and enchanted many of us.f
