It was a tumultuous season for the UNLV football team.
The Rebels started the season 4-1 and hopes for a bowl game were high. The teams fortunes turned however when quarterback Doug Brumfield was hurt early in the game against San Jose State, which the Rebels went on to lose, snapping their three game win streak.
UNLV suffered other injuries as well but the injury to Brumfield was the hardest to recover from and the Rebels, only needing two more wins to qualify for a bowl game, went on to lose their next five games.
The Rebels’ season finale was against in state rival UNR for the Fremont Cannon and UNLV went to Reno and won the game, bringing the cannon back to Vegas to be painted red.
UNLV Athletic Director Erick Harper decided however that the win against UNR wasn’t enough and head coach Marcus Arroyo was fired on Nov. 28 after three seasons as head coach.
Yesterday, Tuesday, Dec. 6, UNLV announced that the new football coach would be Barry Odom, the former defensive coordinator at the University of Arkansas. Odom is being formally introduced this morning.
Odom was the head coach at the University of Missouri from 2016-29, finishing with a record there of 25-25. Odom becomes UNLV’s 13th head football coach.
We welcome Coach Odom to Las Vegas and to the UNLV family and wish him the best of luck.
