Raiders Have At Least 3 Options If Garoppolo Is Not Ready
The Raiders have made some very questionable changes this off season to include releasing Derek Carr after 9 years. It seems as if the Raiders were heading in the right direction after moving to Las Vegas, until disaster after disaster struck the silver and black what felt like all at one time.
From former head coach Jon Gruden’s emails to Henry Ruggs III Speed racing and killing a woman and her dog, the Raiders were in desperate need of rebuilding. Signing Jimmy Garoppolo was a huge question mark from some Raider fans being he was only a third string option for the San Francisco 49ers. He went down with a season ending knee injury in the third game of the 2018 season and missed eight games with ankle injuries in 2020.
The three-year, $67.5 million dollar investment had foot surgery in March. According to sportingnews.com McDaniels seemed to indicate Garoppolo would be able to play in time for the team’s season opener at the Steelers on Sunday, Sept. 10.
But if not, there may be some other QB options available for the Raiders.
- Option 1- Keep everything in house by relying on back up QB Brian Hoyer who has a 16-24 record as a starter in his career and a win loss record of 42-34. Hoyer earned a Super bowl ring only while being the back-up to Tom Brady. Come to think of it, that might work in the Raiders favor being Las Vegas is beginning to a lot like New England with Jimmy Garoppolo, Brian Hoyer, Jakobi Meyers, Phillip Dorsett and Adam Butler all former players for the Patriots.
- Option 2- Sign a free agent. But that’s a very thin choice of quality QB’s to choose from. Teddy Bridgewater could be an option if you are willing to pay for another injury. Just 4 years ago Bridgewater was in the back of an ambulance questioning his future in the NFL with a dislocated knee.
- Option 3- make another trade for a young QB like Bailey Zappe. I’m sure Josh McDaniels wouldn’t mind adding another patriot to the roster. Zappe was the 3rd string quarterback for New England that took advantage of the spotlight when it was presented to him due to injuries. Winning both of his starts, the Patriots scored the most and second most points on the year.
Whatever option the Raiders go with, (if any of these at all.) time is of the essence.
