First Black-Owned Theater In Nevada Coming To Las Vegas
Black Owned Organization In Las Vegas Paving The Way
Making History With The First Black Owned Theatre In Las Vegas
With all that they’ve accomplished, the organization didn’t stop there. B.I.T.H. is about to make a huge announcement regarding the opening of the Legacy Theater of Excellence., which will be the first African American-owned and operated theater/education complex in the history of Nevada.
This iconic theatre will honor African Americans who have paved the way for black entertainers, according to Russell. Such as the legendary Nat King Cole, Dinah Washington, Lena Horne, Ben Vareen, and Sammy Davis Jr., just to name a few. And Vegas is the perfect place to open this powerful venue.
Back in the day, in 1955, our city was home to the Moulin Rouge. That was considered the first major interracial hotel in the nation, according to Nevada Park Service. It only makes sense that our same Las Vegas community would be home to the first Black-owned theater in the state as well. The Legacy Theater of Excellence will be opening in the fall in Las Vegas. As of right now, the location is being kept a surprise, though we know it will be somewhere in the Historic West Side.
How The Community Can Help
To raise funds for the new theatre space, B.I.T.H. is holding a benefit concert. Called “From Broadway With Love”, the show will feature musical numbers from the biggest and best Broadway musicals. While it honors African American legends from stage, television, music and film. The fundraiser will be on May 25, 2004 at 7:30 p.m. at Reynolds Hall at the Smith Center in Las Vegas.
