Wind Gusts Are Expected To Hit 55mph This Weekend
You should be aware that wind gusts are expected to hit 55mph this weekend throughout the Vegas valley!
The last time it got really windy in Las Vegas, my neighbors lost their family trampoline. I remember waking up and seeing it in the park behind our house, smashed to pieces because of the awesome power of mother nature! We also had a bunch of trees in our neighborhood that broke (example above) from the gusts. And I got a chuckle from some of the local influence pages that made jokes about the wind.
A high wind advisory has been issued for the area and Las Vegas residents are being asked to brace themselves for potentially extreme weather conditions. The high wind advisory is set to start at 8 a.m. on Saturday, March 23rd, and is expected to remain in effect until around 2 a.m. Sunday morning.
Naturally, this also means if you suffer from seasonal allergies, you should probably be aware; because air quality conditions will be affected as well. Elderly people, children and anyone with respiratory issues are being advised to stay indoors as much as possible.
Wind Gusts Are Expected To Hit 55mph This Weekend
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued the high wind advisory due to an expected drop in temperature that will contribute to strong winds in our region. The NWS says anyone in the Vegas valley should expect wind speeds between 25 to 35 mph, but gusts could exceed 50 mph! When gusts reach those speeds, they have the potential to create dangerous driving conditions which include: reduced visibility when driving, difficulty driving larger vehicles, and debris filling the roadways.
Additionally, according to a graphic on their website, potential hazards from the gusts will be: dust, fallen trees, power line damage, hazardous crosswinds, and large waves at Lake Mead.
To keep you and your loved ones safe during such windstorms, here are some additional tips you can take:
- Secure any outdoor items that can fly away! As mentioned earlier, trampolines are a big problem during high wind advisories. Bring in any outdoor umbrellas, patio cushions and lightweight objects.
- Stay indoors if you can! If you absolutely need to be outside during these kinds of storms, it’s advised to avoid being near trees or power lines.
- Secure Outdoor Items! Bring in or secure any outdoor furniture, decorations, or items that could be blown away by the wind. This includes patio furniture, umbrellas, and lightweight objects.
- Stay Indoors! If possible, stay indoors during the high wind advisory. Avoid going outside unless absolutely necessary, especially in open areas or near trees and power lines.
- Drive with EXTRA caution! Distractions are already a large cause for accidents on the valley roadways, but it’s extra important to drive cautiously during storms. Put the phone away, be observant of your surroundings and maintain a firm grip of your steering wheel.
- Check road conditions before you leave the house! Most map apps do a great job at telling you about heavy traffic AND potential debris on the roads. Make sure you check them before heading out.
