Cleanup, Aisle 3: Smith’s Merger With Albertson’s Hits A Roadblock
It seems as though grocery shopping in Las Vegas is quickly becoming an illusion of choice. At one time, Albertson’s and Vons were separate companies. There was Smith’s, Fresh & Easy, Glazier’s. But then Albertson’s and Vons had a merger. Now Smith’s and their parent company Kroger is looking to merge with Albertson’s.
Now we love shopping at Smith’s and Albertson’s. Even you, Vons (even though they closed the one closest to our studio). But soon enough things could get complicated. All three groceries stores would become one (with a handful of locations being sold off). Would prices drop? Probably not. Would everyone keep their jobs? We remain skeptical. Do we want one proper grocery store chain in Las Vegas?
The Washington Attorney General has an issue with the Smith’s, Albertson’s Merger
Enter our hero from the north. Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson announced in a press conference on Monday that the state is suing to stop the proposed $25 billion merger. There, the two companies make up more than half of all the grocery store sales, according to the Seattle Times. That’s a serious issue.
Here in Southern Nevada, there are few exceptions to the rule. Sure, you could shop at Walmart for your groceries… but it is missing a little something. WinCo exists in limited areas. But this merger would create a 500 pound gorilla for the valley.
The lawsuit is going to delay the merger
While both companies were preparing everyone for an “early 2024” completion, it appears as though the regulatory pressure and lawsuit is going to pump the brakes a bit. The company now estimates the merger could be complete later this year. But if Washington’s Attorney General (and potentially our own) cause enough of a stir, there’s a potential the deal could break apart faster than a glass jar of Smuckers on Aisle 12.
