It was a brunch filled with acid-washed jeans, teased hair, Aqua Net and leg warmers.

The Nevada Society For the Prevention Against the Cruelty of Animals celebrated 40 years of saving Las Vegas’ most vulnerable population of furry creatures.

The celebration happened at The Veil Pavilion at Silverton Casino on Aug. 20. The theme of the benefit brunch was an ode to the year that the NSPCA started its original no-kill shelter, which was in 1982.

The venue was draped in bright colored fabrics, and funky lights bounced along the walls. Huge neon Slinkys clung from the ceiling as totally tubular decorations, and retro arcade games lined the wall.

Bottomless “meow-mosas” and “hair of the dog” Bloody Mary cocktails were served along a mouthwatering meal that was filled with essential brunch foods such as sweet French toast, fluffy eggs, and home-style potato hash .

The day was meant to celebrate the achievements of the NSPCA. And although we partied with a theme from the past, the day was also about reflecting for the future.

Craig Murrin, board president and treasurer of the NSPCA, discussed the organization’s strides from the last few years, which include a new facility and an in-house vet team.

Over 300 people attended this event and enjoyed the overall fun ambience of the brunch. Elvis Presley, Boy George and Mr. T even made appearances at the Veil!

This brunch was paw-tastic! And at the end of the day, events like these help the creatures in our community who don’t have a voice. The organization takes in over 2,000 dogscatsrabbits and other small pets annually. The NSPCA focuses on “treating each and every animal in our care as an individual with a name, identity, and unique personality.”

The goal of the NSPCA is to provide their animals with loving homes where they can thrive, provide kinship and have a rewarding relationship with their human family.
