Dramatic Last Second Shot Averts Disaster For Aces
What could’ve been a nightmare scenario for the Las Vegas Aces unfolded late in yesterday’s win or go home playoff game against Chicago at the Thomas and Mack Center. Trailing by two with scant seconds to go and Chicago trying to dribble out the clock or get fouled to go to the free throw line, Aces forward Dearica Hamby came up with a steal and then launched a 38 foot shot that splashed through the nets with six seconds left. Hamby acknowledged later that maybe she shot the shot a couple of seconds too soon. The Aces stifled Chicago’s last gasp three point attempt to seal the win. Hamby finished with 17 points. Vegas had five players in double figures, led by Liz Cambage with 23 points and Kayla McBride with 16. The Aces now move on to the league semifinals and a best of five series against the Washington Mystics. Washington will have home court advantage and the first game is tomorrow at 5:30pm in Washington. The Mystics finished the regular season with the league’s best record at 26-8 and are the top seed in the playoffs. Game two will be Thursday in Washington and the Aces will return home for game three on Sunday.
